Lu Brown Fund It is with sadness that we report the death of Lu Brown on July 4, 2005 at age 103 Lu Brown was Honorary Chair of East Branch Friends of the Arts and was an inspiration for the founding of East Branch Friends of the Arts in 1995. Her 100th birthday was March 23, 2002. To honor Lu in her 100th year, a fund was established for enhancements for the school auditorium. The goal of $2,500 was met and matched by East Branch Friends of the Arts. New risers and music stand lights for the music department were purchased and are currently in use. We thank all who contributed to this fund. Lu Brown began teaching in Keene Valley in 1921 and started a music program for her students in the early '30s, prior to the completion of the "new" Keene Central School. She retired from teaching in 1964. Lu directed the musical, "The Pirates of Penzance" which was performed in the Keene Central School auditorium, in 1937. Lu directed this production once more in 1952. "The Pirates of Penzance" was produced again in the spring of 2001 by present day KCS students in the same auditorium. However, this time around Mrs. Brown was a very observant and enthusiastic member of the audience. Lu Brown led a very inspiring, active and interesting life. She will be greatly missed.
